Patient and Employee Spotlight - Nick Leclerc

Nick Leclerc recently joined the WinPO team under somewhat unique circumstances, having the perspective of a person with an amputation while working in the industry. We wanted to take this opportunity to spotlight Nick and his experience.

1. How did you become a person with an amputation?

I was born with Spina-Bifida and had a club foot for nearly 20 years after breaking my leg while playing hockey. I was having problems with pain and infections, so I decided that amputation was the best option for me since having multiple reconstruction surgeries already.

2. Why did you choose to use WinPO for your prosthetic care?

WinPo was highly recommended to me by my surgeon, plus the location was convenient and close for me.

3. When and why did you decide to join the team at WinPO?

I joined WinPo 6 months ago in October of 2022. I am a Red Seal Certified Plumber/Gas Fitter by trade, but switching to a career where I can learn more about how prosthetics work and be hands on learning about my own prosthetic along with all the other types of prosthetics.

4. What kind of work do you do at WinPO?

I am a Prosthetic Technician. I handle the fabrication and maintenance of prostheses.

5. What is it like working at WinPO?

It's been great working here.  It also helps me see all different types of components that could help me in the future to play golf, Slo-pitch and basketball among other things.

7. What advice do you have for other amputees?

My advice would be to stay active and set realistic goals that can help bring your confidence up. Let your prosthetist know exactly what you want to do and they will be able to help you find the channels you need to get there.

8. What advice do you have for people who are thinking about a career in P&O?

If you are technically inclined and like to work with your hands, have a good eye for detail and like to make a difference in people's lives I would recommend a career in prosthetics and orthotics.
